Meet My ....

Overlocker!

I've wanted one for ages and when I saw this baby in a sale I just had to have it as an early birthday present (like 6 months early).

I haven't had the chance to try it out yet but I can't wait!

My Creative Space: Braided Bead Bracelet

Still no house and still no sewing machine! So this week I have been making bracelets.

I LOVE bracelets. There are so many quick and easy options for making your own and they make great gifts too.

If you're into making bracelets then make sure to check out this website. There are a bunch of awesome DIY bracelet tutorials to choose from and no doubt you'll be seeing some more of them around here soon (though fingers crossed we find a house before too long so I can get sewing again).

Remember ....

22nd February 2011

A year ago today the lives of many were changed forever .... the city of Christchurch was changed forever. Please take a moment to remember the lives that were lost on that fateful day and the struggles/hardships that the people of Christchurch have had to deal with and are still dealing with.

Review: Be Natural Cereal

Our family are not big breakfast eaters and usually we only have a few options to choose from which gets boring very quickly. So I was really excited when the courier turned up on the doorstep with a box of Be Natural cereal, Manuka Honey & Spice Clusters with flakes, for us to try.

I love that it contains 5 different wholegrains which really adds to the delicious crunchy texture and flavour. It's light, crisp and the spice clusters add a wonderful depth of flavour to the cereal without being overpowering. It also doesn't have any raisins in it! This is big for us as neither Riley or I like raisins in our cereal.

It definitely gets the fussy preschooler (and Mummy) seal of approval! He barely paused to breathe between mouthfuls.

Thanks Be Natural for letting us try the latest variant in your range of cereals. It was delicious!

My Creative Space: I Spy Bag

A friend of mine gave me the awesome idea of making Riley an I Spy Bag. It's a great portable toy, perfect for taking in the car or in our case on a plane.

It was really quick and easy to put together. I used rice for the filling and top stitched around the outside edge of the bag which wasn't really necessary but finishes it off nicely.

There are some useful tips for sewing with vinyl here.

This is the photo that goes with it. Some of the items I already had around the house and other's I found at dollar stores which are a great place for picking up small items on the cheap and perfect for this project.

January Makes

With all the madness of cleaning, packing and moving I totally forgot to post my crafty makings for January at the beginning of the month! Better late than never right?

- Bib and Burp Cloth Set
- Baby Travel Chair
- Grocery Bag Dispenser
- Travel Tic Tac Toe

There have actually been a few more makes for January but I haven't gotten around to blogging about those ones yet.

Piquing My Pinterest

Riley is currently in the phase of wanting to learn to read and write so this week I thought I'd share some educational ideas for preschoolers (click on the image to go to the original pin) ....

Free alphabet printables. Print them off, laminate them and get a whiteboard marker and they can be used over and over again.

I love the idea of an alphabet box and it would have been good when Riley was a bit younger. I think he's too advanced for it now, though I'm sure he'd still have fun with it.

Sight word parking lot game. What a great way to make word recognition/reading fun! Riley is mad about cars.

This is a fantastic website where you can create your own worksheets with whatever words/letters that you choose. There are even sentence and paragraph worksheets.

Valentine's Day Craft Swap - Sent and Recieved

A little while ago I signed up for a Valentine's Day themed craft swap over at And Sew We Craft.

Here is what I made for my swap partner using this super simple tutorial ....

A Valentine's Day swap just wouldn't be complete without chocolate which just happens to fit perfectly inside the mini tote bag.

And here is what I received ....

How cute is that owl?! And my favourite chocs too, talk about feeling spoilt.

Thanks Brittonie!

My Creative Space: Crayon Roll

We've been in Wellington almost a week now and already we've been to our first social event, a little girl's 1st birthday party.

For her present I managed to whip up a super sweet crayon roll (the first of my handmade gifts for the year).

I followed this tutorial here but used a length of ribbon instead of elastic and a button. I used materials that I already had on hand including the crayons which I found while organizing my sewing room in preparation for our move. The fabric is Strawberries in Strawberry by Robert Kaufman.

Rock Pools

How cool are rock pools! Perfect for a certain little boy who loves exploring at the beach but is terrified of the sea.

The boy's had a blast today hunting for crabs and checking out the local rock pool inhabitants.

We saw lots of sea snails, limpets, crabs, shrimp and even some little fish. There is always so much to see and learn about at the rock pools.

Piquing My Pinterest

Hello Wellington! Yes that's right, the move went well and we are once again back home among family and friends. All of our stuff has been packed away and will be going into storage until we find somewhere to live, including my sewing machine! I miss it already so today I thought I'd share a few of the craft/sewing projects that I want to get started on as soon as I have all of my supplies back ....

I NEED one of these! I am such a messy/disorganized sewer and I'm forever losing things so this would be such a great help.

This is just cool and would look great hanging up in my new sewing room.

How cute are these little guys! I can think of a few kiddies who would love one of these for Christmas (yes I'm thinking about next Christmas already).

Love this! I'm going to have to do this and hang them in our new house. So cute.

Sewing for Moving Day

I had a couple of projects that I wanted to finish especially for moving day. One of them was making some more of these for Riley to pack some of his favourite toys in for taking to my mum's house.

I made these two slightly differently to my original one. In the one with the car fabric I used medium weight interfacing and in the other some fusible fleece. I used ribbon instead of making fabric ties which was a fantastic time saver. They both turned out great though I think I prefer the extra structure that the fusible fleece gives.

I also whipped up this cute little pouch for myself.

It's been a while since I've worked with zips but I put this together in about 10 minutes. It really was quick and easy and now I have something super cute to put some of my little bits and pieces in. You know those things that don't really have a proper home but you don't want them to get lost in the move (or is that just me?)
